ZBT was founded as fuel cell research centre in 2001 by the State of North-Rhine Westphalia and the European funds for regional development and is located in Duisburg, Germany. Focusing on application-oriented R&D ZBT bridges the gap between basic research at the University and requirements of industry. Today ZBT acts as established partner of industry, research institutions and universities in the field of fuel cell and battery technology as well as novel energy technologies. More than 100 full time employees work in seven departments: fuel processing, fuel cells and systems, electrochemistry and coating, micro systems and fluid mechanics, hydrogen and batteries, production technology, quality assurance and testing. Additionally ZBT operates the accredited fuel cell testing laboratory PBT.

ZBT is a non profit limited company, CEO is Prof. Dr. Angelika Heinzel and share holder is the University Duisburg-Essen. The department “Fuel Cells and Systems” is focusing on cost reduction, performance optimisation and long-term stability of PEM fuel cells. Since 2004 ZBT has been working on HT-PEMFC technology. Beside the material and production process development of high temperature stable bipolar plates, air and liquid cooled stacks from single cells up to 3 kW have been designed and tested. For system integration HT-PEMFC stacks have been coupled to methanol and propane reformers working closely together with the department “Fuel Processing”, which has more than 10 years experience in the field of hydrogen production for fuel cell applications with main focus on qualification of catalysts, fuel processor and component development as well as system integration.


Prof. Dr. Angelika Heinzel is Professor of Energy Technology in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering,
University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany since 2001 and acts as scientific CEO at ZBT since 2002. She holds a PhD degree
from the Department of Chemistry, University of Oldenburg, Germany since 1985 and has 23 years of experience in the
field of electrochemistry, fuel cells and hydrogen production.

Katrin Nürnberg has been working as a research scientist at ZBT since 2008 and is a technical expert in the field of
quality management, testing and environmental simulation. She has gained more than 6 years of experience in quality
assurance. She holds a Dipl.-Ing. (FH) in Physical Engineering, Fachhochschule Gelsenkirchen, Germany since 2006.

Mario Koppers has been working as a research scientist at ZBT since 2007 and is a technical expert in the field of
certification, qualification and testing. His research areas have been standards and guidelines, specially for fuel cells
and components. He holds a Dipl.-Ing. (FH) in Mechatronics, Hochschule Niederrhein, Germany since 2006.
